I love Shark Tank. It's one of my favorite shows on television. Watching other entrepreneurs pitch their dreams to a panel of millionaires & billionaires is exciting. Of course I wish I was in their position with the opportunity to solicit an investment for my business. Then it dawned on me, I don't want to pitch to the sharks, I want to BE THE SHARK!

Your business may be new to the ocean of free enterprise and you may be relatively unknown, but it's no excuse to have your head down. Daymond John, Mark Cuban, and many more started out like you; with nothing. Sure an investment would be lovely as you work hard to scale your business but we must lose the mentality that we NEED an investment. There are plenty of successful entrep...

Fall is officially here. It's my favorite season of the year, but with the changing of seasons comes new obstacles and new hardships to endure. If you're not in a storm right now that means you're about to enter one. but we can't let that scare us.

In Mogul Motivation episode 36  I talked about this. The season you are about to enter will be a winning season. A season that makes you stronger and better! As entrepreneurs we must see the good in every situation we can't let the chaos around us distract us and hinder us. We have to remain focused on our goals, building a solid and profitable business! It's easier said than done, but it can be done & it WILL be done!

So welcome new obstacles, new burdens, new problems, b...

I see it everyday on social media. I see these posts with people boasting about how they went from poverty to millions of dollars in just 12 months. I see all of these memes with inspirational text laid out over luxury cars and fancy boats. These posts are not truthful. They are not telling the truth because you will not be rich over night. You will not become a success in one year. You will make mistakes. You will fuck up. It's going to happen.

For many this is hard to accept because no one wants to go through the fire. The hardship of entrepreneurship. No one wants to accept the fact that you will be broke for a while, that many people close to you (friends & family) will NOT support your business. You have to grow and learn. You must...

A lot of what I discuss through the Mogul Motivation brand (podcast & blog) has roots in mental health for entrepreneurs. Because our career choice is still very much unorthodox even in 2017. We only eat unless we make a sale. Our bills are only paid unless we make a sale. We don't have a guaranteed check waiting for us every Friday. It can become extremely stressful to deal with this on a day to day basis. This is the life we chose however because we believe in our dreams 110%. Since we decided to create our own business and way of life why not create our own atmosphere?

The most important meal of the day is breakfast. The most important time of the day is morning. The start of your day, believe it or not, sets the tone for everything...

From the moment I became an entrepreneur I been focused on dodging the stigma that "all Black businesses have poor customer service". Although the statement isn't true I refused to contribute to that belief. I have always went above & beyond to satisfy my customers/clients fully! The issue though is we talk so much about how small businesses must have high quality customer service but we never address how customers can be poisonous. Of course I have made mistakes along the way as every business does, but God as my witness I have ALWAYS strived to correct my short comings with customers because reputation is everything to small businesses and we must protect it with integrity.

Despite this I still have run into numerous of bad customers...

FairPlay Finer Foods

Ultra Foods

Dollar Tree

Ultra Beauty Cosmetics (yes you read that right)

The Chicago Theater

CW Price

Speedway

Home Depot

Those are the 7 employers I've had my entire life starting from my junior year in high school. I was never fired I quit every single one.

Although some of these jobs I deserved to be fired due to performance (cause I didn't care) I never gave a company that satisfaction. I quit every job I've had simply because I wasn't made to work under a corporate structure, to build someone else's dream. Don't get me wrong there is nothing wrong with working a job and I have nothing against those that have jobs. I honestly believe that having a business and a side job is a faster track to financial freedom...

Honestly, I would say about 90% of entrepreneurship is a mental battle. Especially when you are just starting out and you're still a relative nobody in the world of business. You will go back and forth over confidence. You will have anxiety, you will hit storms of depression. It's ugly.

A huge reason why I made it this far in my journey is because I have learned how to transform energy. I believe this is a huge reason why many successful entrepreneurs are a success themselves. Transforming energy means taking the negativity that surrounds you and making it positive. Forcing the bad things to support your goals. It's a lot easier said than done but here are 3 Mogul Motivation tips I use that work for me;

1. Focus on a solution not the pr...

Money controls the world. It's just a reality you have to come to terms with. If money wasn't important then you wouldn't have to pay rent, mortgage, car note. You wouldn't have to pay for healthcare, hospital bills, groceries, etc. Unfortunately money is required for all of these things and more.

You started your business to follow your dreams and make money while doing something you love. At this point you're a small business just a small tadpole in the ocean swimming amongst sharks. It can be intimidating in the beginning trust me I know. How can you, just a small time entrepreneur, gain success and wealth in a world that's over saturated. It will take some time it will take a lot of hard work however it's possible an...

A little bit about me, my name is Kristan Shelton affectionately known to others as Krissy or Kriss. I started my non-profit H.O.P.E Group in January 2014. I started my organization as an opportunity to be a part of the change I wished to see in my community. Growing up in St. Louis, MO, I, like most, faced the statistical shadows that plagues many of our working and lower class citizens. The older I got the more I understand that I did not want to fall in the trap, literally and figuratively. After completing my Business admin degree in 2011 and 5 months away from completing my Masters of Public Admin degree (May 2014), I was working for a non-profit in Kansas City, MO and I felt it was the time to move forward with my own vision. H.O...

You have figured out your passion and/or your expertise. You have decided to pursue it full steam ahead. Now it's time to start building your brand.

A brand is deeper than a company name, logo, and website, all of which I will discuss in this post. A brand is what people think about instantly when they hear about your business and your name as a whole. If negative thoughts rise in most people's minds then you have a branding issue and it must be corrected ASAP! However lucky for you, you're just starting out so you can build a solid brand NOW! Let's start with your business name.

It's important to always find a name that stands out from others, but also remains true to the culture of your business. Your business name shouldn't...
